It is hard to believe but we are already in our third year of elementary school for our big guy! Something about second grade just seems BIG. But he was beyond ready! This year feels like his first NORMAL school year and we are SO excited for him.

A lot of his close buddies are in the other second grade class but he took it in stride and was excited to see who he might see again from kindergarten. The great thing about his small school is his grade level does lunch and both recesses together so he still gets lots of time with all of his friends.

Hot lunch has been free for the past two years because of the pandemic but that has sadly ended (for him and for me). Packing lunches has become a part of our lives again so that’s been a fun adjustment (for mostly me – ha!). Did I forget to send a drink one day already? Of course not.

He was VERY excited about the teacher that he got this year! When we asked him why he wanted that particular teacher, his answer was really only because she seemed to be friends with his first grade teacher. But we will take it because we are HUGE fans of his first grade teacher!

When his new teacher asked him what he was most excited about for second grade, he said writing! Which was what he said at meet the teacher last year too. So he’s nothing if not consistent. She has already made a huge emphasis on reading and it has certainly caught on! Caleb has always loved to read but now he seems to be reading nonstop if he has any extra moments. Mrs. Abney for the win!

Every year, our tradition is to have a Back to School Brinner {breakfast for dinner} the night before school starts. This of course makes the boys feel special but more than anything, it gives our whole family an opportunity to chat about the upcoming year and pray over the boys and pray for all the things. It’s been fun to see how much the boys look forward to this night!

The whole dining room is decorated in a back to school theme and I always lay out their backpacks to ignite some excitement. The boys were pumped to keep their Dude Perfect and baseball backpacks for this year.

Even though Caleb started a week earlier than Luke’s preschool, we celebrated both of them! Ever since Caleb started preschool, we have asked him the same exact questions every year. So this is since he was 2 years old! It has been so fun to see how answers change and how some have stayed exactly the same.

What is your favorite color? Green
What is your favorite food? Pizza
Who is your best friend? Brooks
What is your favorite thing to play with? My Pokémon toys
What is your favorite animal? Cape buffalo
What is your favorite movie? Planes
What is your favorite book? Dog Man and Cat Kid
What do you want to be when you grow up? I no longer want to be a spy because it seems dangerous if you quit that or get caught. I want to be a construction worker now.
Here are all his answers (& cute pics!) from past years:

Y’all. His sweet little answer for how he plans to change the world. None of it prompted and all him. Moments like this, I am always reminded that this is Caleb’s mission field and our greatest ministry is disciple him and walk him through what it looks like to be a light in the darkness.

Where we cannot enter, God is with him. And the most comforting thing of all is knowing that God loves him more and His plans are far greater anyway. So here we are again, trusting God with our guy as he walks the halls of second grade! We are praying BIG things for our BIG guy!!
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9
